The Algarve is the far south-western tip of Europe: ochre cliffs dropping into turquoise water, beaches tucked between the rocks, fig and almond trees and white villages clinging to the headlands. Over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, and an ocean that softens everything.
For 19 nights, the group stays in apartments in Lagos, an old walled town with baroque churches covered in gilded wood and azulejos. The days are free. Your tour escort offers optional excursions to Faro, the regional capital, with its ramparts and white bell towers, or into the hinterland, among almond groves and rammed-earth walls.
The stay ends with two nights in Lisbon, including a guided walking tour from the Jerónimos Monastery to the Belém Tower, then a full day to get lost in the Alfama, Chiado or Bairro Alto.
Three weeks to settle into Portugal's rhythm, far from the Quebec winter or autumn.
